WDS Company Profile

The History

Originally formed in 1952, WDS adopted it’s name from the Woodside Die Sinking Company Limited and soon established a sound reputation for standard components, jigs and fixtures, later moving on to acquire companies such as the specialist broach manufacturer W.H.Marley.

Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s the divisions broadened their expertise and developed to meet the high accuracy and low cost requirements of the CNC machine tool market. The specialist design and manufacture of base plates, cubes and workholding systems required by the modern systems kept WDS at the forefront of the technology, enabling the company to remain a market leader and keep bespoke solutions as the mainstay of their business.

WDS moved closer to providing a complete machine tool accessories portfolio during the 1990’s by purchasing Jones & Shipman small tools division this includes products such as machine vices and rotating centres. Towards the end of the decade £1million was invested in relocating the business to the present site at Leeds. The trend of increased investment and strategic acquisitions continued into this decade with WDS incorporating the Hydraulic Workholding Division of SPX Spencer Franklin to broaden the product portfolio further with another well-established name.

WDS are the UK’s leading manufacturer of Standard Parts for use in Machine build components, Standard Parts, Jigs & Fixtures, and consumer products. The range of products available from WDS grows daily and so has the methods available to designers and engineers for identifying, specifying and purchasing any of the 15,000+ parts currently held in stock. For example, WDS has made ordering workholding solutions cheaper and quicker by removing small order surcharges.

The WDS range covers five main divisions, Standard Parts, Machine Accessories, Spencer Franklin Hydraulic Workholding, Broaching and General & Modular Workholding.

Standard Parts range

The Standard Parts range consists of standard engineering products used in general manufacture and engineering work. Standard high quality products WDS will have a product you require from stock with next day delivery available. Key products include: Cast Iron, Steel & Aluminium Profiles, Clamps, Nuts, Washers, Screws & Studs and Toggle Clamps & Accessories.

Machine Accessories range

The Machine Accessories range is a specialist range of products for the manufacture of industrial and commercial machinery, these machine parts are essential for design, build and maintenance of food, packaging, processing and print machinery plus many more. Key products include: Castors & Wheels, Plastic Handwheels & Metal Handwheels, Machine Feet - Levelling Feet and Plastic Hand Knobs.

Spencer Franklin Hydraulic Workholding and Equipment

The Spencer Franklin range consists of several clamping and pressing products, hydraulic power sources and positioning rams. This diverse range can be used for automated processes, with the specialist product the HydraClamp ideal for wood carving and woodworking applications.

Spencer Franklin products are designed and made in the UK at our Leeds based site making WDS the leading hydraulic manufacturer. Key products include: Hydraulic Power Sources, Boosters & Pumps, Clamping Cylinders and Slide Clamps, Linear & Swing Clamps.

Broaching and Broach Equipment

WDS are the owner and manufacturer of the Marlco Broaching range. Variations of design include Litecut, Hevicut, Keyway and Izod & Charpy broaches as well as Push / Pull broaching deviations. Broaching tools available include manual 2 speed presses.

Other broaching services include, broach regrinding and subcontract broaching

General and Modular Workholding

With many years of experience in the workholding market servicing many industries such as aerospace, automotive and general CNC engineering.

WDS offer a comprehensive bespoke fixturing and workholding service supplying customised double siders, tombstones, cubes and fixture plates added to this is the flexible modular clamping system MicroLoc. Other key products include: Magnetic Chucks, Double Siders & Tombstones & Fixture Plates, and Ball Lock shanks and bushes locating products.

Staying at the forefront of web technology and engineering design has allowed WDS to create a company website www.wdsltd.co.uk that provides users with free access to download items in any current 3D CAD format. WDS’ FREE 3D CAD service reduces product time-to-market by offering file types specifically required by the individual designer.

In addition to the range of standard knobs, wheels, fasteners and threaded parts, WDS also offers a full design and manufacture ‘Specials’ service for all threaded parts in a range of materials and finishes. Components and fixtures can be modified individually or whole production runs set up with short lead times, making WDS a valued supplier to small customers through to OEM’s and resellers servicing the MRO market in the UK and overseas.
